National Business Women’s Week

October 17-21, 2004

October 21, 2002 - October 25, 2002

National Business Women's Week begins on the Monday of the third full business week in October. If a local organization chooses to begin NBWW on Sunday or end on a later date due to scheduling arrangements, they may do so.

Since its creation in 1928, the event has been sponsored by Business and Professional Women (BPW)/ USA for the purpose of recognizing and honoring the achievements of working women throughout history. BPW’s members call attention to local women entrepreneurs, facilitate discussions on the needs of workingwomen, share information about successful workplace policies, and raise awareness of the resources available for women in their communities.

Though women have more business and professional opportunities today than in 1928, the program outlined for the first observance of NBWW is still relevant to our current challenges.

NBWW was moved to the third full week of October in 1938. Over the years, NBWW has become an event widely recognized by public and private institutions and local communities. Each U.S. President since Herbert Hoover has opened the first day of NBWW with a letter recognizing the contributions and achievements of working women. In addition, on the state and local levels, governors and mayors often issue similar proclamations.

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR SELECTION CRITERIA

2005-2006

Each BPW organization in BPW/Kansas may select a local business to honor in each division.  It is important that you select employers who promote the advancement of women employees.  The selection criteria are based on the following qualifications:

2.     Has provided outstanding opportunities for upward mobility and additional training for female employees.

Employers must meet ONE OR MORE of the above criteria; they do not have to meet them all.  BPW/Kansas is interested in the overall policies and management procedures as they relate to the criteria of the business, corporation or other employing entity, not an individual who is an outstanding "boss."

Division 1 - Business with 15 or more employees

Division 2 - Business with fewer than 15 employees
