MISSION

The Young Careerist Program recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of successful women and men and introduces them to the mission and vision of Business and Professional Women/USA (BPW/USA), BPW Kansas and their respective local community.  The program offers unique learning opportunities for personal and professional growth and leadership experiences through participation in networking, workshops, public speaking, interviewing, and group activities.  

BPW MISSION is to achieve equity for all women in the workplace through advocacy, education and information.

 The Young Careerist Program fulfills that mission by helping women:

bulletCommunicate better, one on one and in a group
bulletLearn to network, interview, speech presentation and understand legislative issues
bulletAddress special issues women confront, in and out of the workplace
bulletDevelop leadership and personal skills
bulletBuild self-confidence in personal, professional and community settings

 2005-2006 BPW Kansas YC Goals:

  1. To promote the benefits of the YC Program to women in Kansas communities.  Encourage Local Organization to facilitate communication with BPW Kansas Young Careerist, Rhys Baker, Clay Center, Kansas.
  2. To facilitate Local Organization questions regarding How/When and What to do for sponsoring an YC Program in their local community.
  3. To increase the number of BPW organizations sponsoring YC Programs.
  4. To more than double the number of YC representatives at State Spring Conference.
  5. To prepare State YC selected at Spring Conference for BPW/USA National Conference in July 2006.

 State & Local Action:

1.       Prepare and Distribute YC Program updates after BPW/USA National Conference, July 2005.

2.       Promote YC Program at Fall Conference to encourage organizations to sponsor local competition.

3.       Offer assistance and provide resource material to any local organization interested in sponsoring an YC program.  Maintain communication with the local chairs and utilize the BPW/Kansas newsletter to share information.  

4.       Facilitate Young Careerist competition by partnering with State President and State Individual Development Chair at Spring Conference.

5.       Work with 2006 State Young Careerist for BPW/USA National Conference preparation.

YC basic requirements constituting the mandatory national criteria are as follows:

·         be between the ages of 21 and 35, inclusive, by the July 31st following the first competition in which she/he participates;’

·         be or have been employed in business or the professions with at least one (1) year of full-time experience;

·         be living, working, training or continuing her/his education in the area served by the sponsoring local organization conducting the program; and

·         Sign the legislative platform agreement. 

‘Your question emphasizes the critical importance of making sure all of your YC candidates understand the BPW platform prior to participating in the program. 

Competition Format:

A.      Application

B.      Personal Interview

C.      Individual Speech Presentation State YC Topic will be provided via State Newsletter, Advocate post 2005 National Conference

1.       Each YC candidate will prepare a four-minute speech on required topic, no visual aides may be used.

2.       Candidates will use the same speech throughout all competitions;revisions can be made.

D.      Impromptu Speech

1.    Candidate will draw topic, has option of returning topic and drawing another, which will

       have to be accepted.

2.    Will be given 30 seconds to compose thoughts and 2 minutes to deliver speech.

Timeline of EventsTasks to be Accomplished:

A.      Fall Conference/Board (Oct. 8 & 9, 2005 in Salina )

B.      Notify State YC Chair if your local organization will have a YC representative at Spring Conference by January 31, 2006.

C.      Submit your local organization’s YC representative’s Biographical Information /Application to State YC Chair. ( Feb. 15, 2006 via e-mail or mail to my home address!)

D.      Spring Conference is State YC Competition/ Spring Board (March 25 & 26, Hays.

E.      National Conference 2006

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITES:

          Each local organization is responsible for the expenses of your YC participant per your LO

           Bylaws.  The BPW/Kansas YC representative will receive one half of one night’s lodging,

          Free registration and the banquet meal associated with their recognition at State

           Convention.  At Nationals, she will receive free registration plus $300 for expenses.
